IRAN - IRAQ WAR : In Pictures

Economic Destruction : A burning oil platform. These platforms cost as much as 1.5 billion dollars each to build. United States destroyed 3 of these during its attack against Iran in 1988. In that summer U.S. also shot down an Iranian passenger plane killing the 290 people aboard. The economic infrastructures were the favorites for the American attacks. Iraqis had no favorites, dropping the bombs, and firing the Scud Missiles anywhere they could reach. Iran sustained more than a trillion U.S. dollars in direct damages due to the war. The destruction of the platforms resulted in temporary increases in oil prices, however, Iran and Iraq's desperation to sell their oil at any cost did not push the oil prices above the $28 per barrel mark throughout the war. Each barrel of oil was $43 U.S. ten years earlier, causing economic crash in the West and East, bringing hard cash to the Middle Eastern countries to build an economic basis. However, this ended as OPEC (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries) initiated by the Shah of Iran, destabilized after the Iranian Revolution, the Iran-Iraq war and the U.S. intervention in the region. ©1996 F.
