IRAN - IRAQ WAR : In Pictures ![]() Khooninshahr : A border city of Iran along the Persian Gulf and Arvand River coast line was called Khorramshahr (Joyful City) before the Iraqi invasion. It adopted the name Khooninshahr (City of Blood) after Iraqi troops occupied and systematically destroyed the city in the beginning of the war. This is a 1983 view from outside the city which used to be a favorite spot for tourists and the residents of the city shortly after ejection of the Iraqis from the city in 1983 by Iranian troops. The city regained the name Khorramshahr after the war, but the scars from the war remain. ©1996 F.
