IRAN - CANADA : Friendly Game

August 17, 1997

August 17th 1997, Toronto, Canada A friendly game was hosted by the Canadian Soccer Federation in Varsity Stadium between Iran and Canada. This game was unique and historical in several aspects. It was the first presence of the Iranian team in North America after the Iranian revolution and the second presence here ever. The match had an attendance record of over 15,000 spectators, overwhelming majority of which were Iranian. This was the largest attendance by Iranians at an event held outside Iran (with the exception of cross-Persian Gulf states). The 15,000 Iranians in attendance were mostly from Canada and U.S. with some visitors from overseas. The streets of Toronto became filled with Iranians before and after the game. After the game the celebration took place in the famous Bloor Street, effectively closing off the street to the traffic. This was truly an amazing and memorable seen. One which may not ever be again witnessed in North America.

The sole goal was by Iran in a penalty

A near Goal. Iran should have had many more goals than actually achieved...
